John DUARTE
Sonatinette, op.35
(1968)
- Con anima
- Con delicatazza
- Vivo
Started in 1966 and finished in 1968, the piece is dedicated to the American guitarist, Alice Artzt. In 1966 the Czech guitarist Barbara Polasek asked Duarte to write a piece for her. He sketched two movements but then found she was expecting her third child and would be giving up her career for some time. In 1968 the work was completed for Artzt's debut in Wigmore Hall, London. Sonatinette was subsequently played by Polasek, without her ever knowing this was the piece she requested. Artzt subsequently recorded this work on the Gemini label.
