Julian Bream: Foundations of a Musical Career
Julian Bream (b. 1933) is widely acknowledged as one of this century's finest guitarists. In this fascinating account of Bream's early years, Stuart Button draws upon a collection of letters between Bream's father, Henry Bream, and Wilfrid Appleby, editor of the Bulletin of the Philharmonic Society of Guitarists. This extraordinary correspondence reveals the immense struggle against the financial difficulties and prejudice which Bream faced in trying to establish himself as a professional guitarist at a time when the guitar was not accepted as a proper classical instrument. This book sets Bream's individual rise to success within the context of the guitar's revival in England during the latter half of the 20th century; a revival due in no small part to Bream, who inspired many composers to write works for him such as Reginald Smith Brindle, Lennox Berkeley, Michael Tippett and many others.
