Variations on an original theme
Theme, variations 1-6
The theme is a pastorale-like melody in 6/8, the first variations retain the same metre but feature increased motion and accelerated tempo. A change of metre (2/4, 3/4, 1/4) in the following variations sets a new accent, the slow fifth variation leads to the last fugato-like variation which ends on a cheerful note.
